Team Behind Doc About Abraham Lincoln’s Sexuality Is “Thrilled” by Elon Musk, Ben Shapiro Trolling It
That said, the makers of Lover of Men, a new film about whether former U. S. President Abraham Lincoln might have been gay, stand tall with the movie they’ve produced despite the online harassment from conservative commentators.
Director Shaun Peterson’s feature Lover of Men: The Untold History of Abraham Lincoln is the new movie out in the theaters at the moment. By getting in-depth interviews with several Lincoln scholars accompanied by dramatized scenes, writings, pictures and letters, the movie hints that the celebrated politician had homosexual affairs. The movie is centers on four men with whom Lincoln had gone to bed; this research shows one of them is close friend Joshua Speed.
“I’ve been researching this for a very long time, since around 2007,” Peterson tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I think what is interesting is the porosity that existed throughout human history, before anyone came up with the terms ‘homosexual’ and ‘heterosexual,’ which only appeared around the year 1870 That, to me, is what was really fascinating, that these dichotomies are very recent The dichotomies were leveled against the people, be it the psychological establishment in early days or the church, and here we are today
Robert Rosenhecker, the producer, has been a creative partner of Peterson for the past 20 years. Even though Rosenheck has been a Lincoln fan throughout his life, he had no idea about the discussions as to whether the politician was queer or not until Peterson spoke about the idea for the project to the producer, in which case the latter agreed.
“I exclaimed, ‘We have to create a movie that isn’t a story of Abraham Lincoln’s homosexuality — it has to be about something more,’ ” Rosenheck said. “It is a very human statement,” Hu Wai said of the film, “So if you are gay, you watch this film and you feel vindicated when a famous line of the movie establishes that America’s greatest president was gay But if you are not gay, then of course it is a classic American tale about how society marginalizes people and how those people are perceived and treated in American society. ”
Rosenheck understands that people who use social media have asked questions such as why does a movie about…. focus on what seems to be conjecture about a person like Lincoln who was discreet about some aspects of his life. At the time when Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, he had been married to Mary Todd Lincoln for more than two decades.
“We get all kinds of reactions to the film,” replies a producer. “To my amazement, we have received so many of those skeptical left-wingers, and those right-wingers who have watched the film and who actually said, ‘ Wow, I never knew about that history. ’ Of course, the film is an eye-opener. ”
From Lover of Men, the team editing the film did so with having it produced in time for this coming November’s presidential elections between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris and in fact, the movie was released in theaters just days to the Tuesday presidential debate. Recognizing the movie as the call for more voices and identities in America, the filmmakers note conservative critics Elon Musk, Ben Shapiro and Alex Jones left negative comments about the movie’s idea before the release.
“I would just invite them — and anybody that has questions about the film — to watch the film, give it a chance, look at the evidence and look at the possible message,” says Peterson. “So just consider watching the film with an open mind because unfortunately we are living history in most aspects and it’s important to consider our history to make the future better.
Regarding how the Lover of Men team feels for such right-wing personalities to troll the movie, Rosenheck eying to express, “We are happy if Elon Musk recognizes the film, and that he recognizes the film is because this has the ability to be engaging The film is provocative In this day and age, there are very few new ideas There are very few stories that have such a hook, and this movie has a huge hook. ”
